Kashmir Quake stories

A Month After Quake, Misery Still Ahead,   Death Toll in Asian Quake Surpasses 87,000,
Disease, death loom in Pakistan quake zone

One month after South Asia's monster Oct. 8 earthquake, recovery is a lot further away than it was a similar time after the tsunami or Hurricane Katrina, thanks to the terrain and a lack of donations. Survival is far from assured for the 3 million homeless who face a long, severe winter and could die from freezing or pneumonia. Money is needed to keep the helicopters in the air, plus more tents, stoves and blankets to keep people warm, and food. Camps need more clean water and sanitation, or disease could claim many lives. The United Nations has received about $85 million of the $550 million it needs. More than $4 billion in pledges to the U.N. and aid agencies was given after the tsunami. More than $40 million more is needed just for this month.

The death toll in Pakistan is now 87,350, and in India is 1,350.

Bird flu stories

Controlling birdflu vital to prevent pandemic,   Health experts seek to boost flu drug supplies

The World Health Organization (WHO) is hosting a conference for 400 health and veterinary officials from 100 countries in Geneva. Controlling bird flu in birds is the first step to preventing a human flu pandemic. Fast action could nip outbreaks in the bud, delaying the inevitable. The WHO is tyring to arrange stockpiles of drugs for poorer countries. It would take 8 months to produce 900 million doses of vaccine after a strain able to pass easily from human to human was identified, but it could take that strain only 3-4 months to spread around the world. Anti viral drugs will be needed to bridge the gap.

Japan to Cull 170,000 More Chickens

Japan will cull 170,000 more chickens in an area north of Tokyo after a strain of H5 bird flu, probably the less dangerous H5N2 strain, was discovered on a farm.

Vietnam Confirms 42nd Bird-Flu Death,   Bird flu kills Vietnamese man,
Roche Halts Tamiflu Sales in China,   China Monitors Border Because of Bird Flu

A 42nd person has died of bird flu in Vietnam. Another death is suspected and awaiting test results. Vietnam will be holding large-scale pandemic drills in the second half of November.

China is increasing its preparations for a possible human pandemic. It is guarding the border between Beijing and Hebei province, turning back shipments of poultry that are not from certified farms. It is educating the populace, unlike during the SARS outbreak.

The Swiss maker of the antiviral drug Tamiflu has stopped selling it in China and is handing over supplies to the government. Roche has also limited sales in other countries, including the United States, Switzerland, Germany and Canada, for fear that private suppliers might be hoarding the drug.

Louisiana mulls legal action on failed levees

Louisiana prosecutors are considering whether legal action is justified as a result of the failure of the levees around New Orleans. Louisiana State University's Hurricane Center will conduct a forensic examination. A successful civil judgment could help evacuees recover damages from private insurers.
